Paperwork Needed When Applying for Federal Grants for Small Business

When you are applying for a Federal grant for a small business, whether you have it already started or it is only in the planning stages, there is a lot of paperwork and documentation that is needed no matter where you apply. Most business organizations, banks, and other financial institutions have similar requirements and these are basically needed to show how well the business will work so that they know their money will not be wasted. There are a few things that they will ask for to either accompany the application or for you to show them in person.

Business Plan

The business plan includes many different components. You have to include a detailed description of the business including a breakdown of the sections of the business such as what supplies are needed, how many staff will be hired and so on. There is also a financial section to the business plan explaining the expenses already incurred plus the expected future costs. These are only two of the main parts but there are multiple others. These have to be written in an organized fashion and if you include charts for them, it adds a nice touch for the presentation. The figures must add up consistently and all of the information must be accurate.

Personal Finance Information

It is essential that any financial information, even the personal financial information is accurate. Any discrepancies found may lead to an unpleasant rejection letter from the institute. Any information with regards to income, savings, assets, loans and credit is needed in the documents package. Make sure that all of it makes sense and that it all adds up.

Other Relevant Documentation

If you have had a previous business, it doesn’t matter whether it was successful or not, it has to be accounted for in your application. Any financial paperwork and explanations for why it is no longer in existence is generally expected with your file. While bankruptcy, if applicable in your case, doesn’t usually go over well with financial institutes, they do make exceptions but you have to make a detailed account of the circumstance behind the bankruptcy. Business management classes may be advised in order to be a successful applicant.

The Whole Package

Once you have all of your papers together, check them over for anything that you may have missed. Look over your business plan for any mistakes including typing errors. Include everything neatly in a folder, envelope or another instrument that will keep everything clean and organized. Having this done gives a good impression as the lending officer takes in the whole picture, not just the forms.
