When you apply for grant monies for a small business there may be clauses written in the details describing that are allowed to spend the money on. In many cases this does not happen as long as it is put towards some aspect of the business, whether it is supplies, staff costs, rent, or other components. Before you apply for each grant, read the fine print to make sure that you understand these points. There are some grants available that are only meant to be spent on certain things.
An example of this would be for a contracting company. There are grants open to those business people starting out various types of contracting companies which may be a sole proprietorship or a partnership that only allow the funds to be spent on the equipment needed. If the money is found to be spent on other items they funds can be revoked. For another example, the government offers grants to help out with business debt. This money is not to be used on expanding the business, marketing, or any other sort of expense but only on clearing up already incurred debt.
Typically these specific grants are given by the departments of the government or business organizations that deal with the particular sectors that the money is to be put towards and the applicant has applied for this grant for that very reason. In the past however there have been mistakes made in how the monies were spent and they had to replace it. For any business, this is a major setback.
Before applying for grants, make sure that the money can go against the costs that you need it for. General grant monies are usually allowed for any aspect but always double-check. You can never be too sure. You may be required to give proof of purchase for some items as a reference that you did indeed use the money wisely. Audits do happen occasionally for such things and they are never really easy processes but they are simpler if you keep record of your dealings.
It is always great news to hear that you have received a grant but that can be taken away so easily when a mistake is made. If you need help to find a grant or to understand what each specific grant is meant for, gather your information and visit a financial adviser and ask for assistance. They can explain the terms and facts to you regarding each grant to ensure that there are no mistakes made.
