Types of Federal Grants for College

You can find quite a few federal grants for college available. Many of them are offered directly by the federal government while others are sponsored by colleges, universities, and foundations.

Specific Programs

Here is a list of specific federal grants for college. Again, some of these are indirectly or directly sponsored by the government as well as private institutions or organizations:

TEACH Grant-In order to receive this money you need to agree to serve as a full time teacher in a low income neighborhood. It could be either a public or private school, at either the elementary or secondary school level. The minimum number of years that you should do this would be four of eight calendar years. If you do not fulfill this requirement you would be required to pay the money back under Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan guidelines.

Federal Pell Grant-This is among one of the federal grants for college that does not have to be paid back. That is, as long as the person stays in school for the semester or year in which the money is awarded. A person is required to pay back the money if that person drops out before a certain date during the semester. The maximum amount of money received is about $5, 550.

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)-This is an undergraduate grant given to people who have exceptional financial need. It is given to Pell Grant recipients whose Expected Family Contribution (EFC) rate is low. The lowest level of this grant you can receive would be $100.00 while the highest amount you can receive is about $4,000. The exact amount you would be awarded depends upon the school you plan to attend.

National SMART Grant-The nature of this financial award is to help promote further mathematics or science studies. It is given during the third and fourth year of undergraduate study. It might also be given to a student who is in school for a fifth year if the program requires that a person stay in class that long.

It is intended to be used for students who have declared the following majors: Physical, life, or computer sciences; mathematics, technology, engineering or critical foreign language; non-major liberal arts programs. One of the main requirements is that the student maintains a 3.0 grade point average.

This is only a small list of the federal grants for college available. It also is only a small example of the institutional money that is awarded. The FAFSA website is a great place to learn more.
