Types and Requirements of State Government Grants

State government grants are sometimes offered for some of the same reasons but sometimes for different reasons than federal grants. It often depends upon your geographical location, as state residency may be an issue.

The issuance of this type of locally-funded free money is sometimes ongoing. However, other times it happens only maybe once or maybe once every few years or so. In any case, you are probably curious what type of financial awards is available.

Available Money

State government grants are offered for a variety of purposes. A large chunk of this money funds further education.

Usually this would be to a four-year university, community college, or technical school. Some financial aid packages and scholarships that do not have to be paid back are degree or program-specific while others are not.

However, sometimes state government grants may cover certificate training and vocational rehabilitation programs. All this is done in an effort to help improve a person’s entire quality of life and financial situation.

Other types of state government grants may be available for research. Historical and cultural studies are a huge area of concern. Medical research and scientific studies are also of a high priority.

Additional state government grants may also be available to fund a variety of community service efforts. These may range from encouraging clean city streets to providing safer crosswalks to establishment of teen centers.

Eligibility Criteria

The criteria for receiving state government grants are very different from one another. For instance, some educational grants are based on merit while others are based on financial need.

Certain small business financial assistance awards are given to individuals who pursue a specific purpose. For instance, maybe one wants to start a school or retail store in an economically disadvantaged location.

A different criterion for eligibility is determined on an entirely different basis. For instance, women are often underrepresented in the work force so specific state government grants are set aside for them.

Receipt of state government grants are based on a variety of conditions. For instance, potential recipients of certain sums of money might have to do one or more of the following:

• Demonstrate certain proficiencies or abilities as in the case of being accepted for certain merit scholarships

• Show financial need, such as in the case of receiving financial aid for a higher education

• Follow through on every step of applying for state government grants, such as writing up a proposal when needed
