State grants are offered for similar reasons as federal grants. Each state of the United States has its own specific programs that are separate from that offered by the national government.

Categories of Grants

State grants offered today often fall under one of a few main categories. It helps you to know what is available. You can view what is available by taking a look below:

Small business funding-If you can formulate a feasible business plan, you may be awarded money to start a new business. You could also receive money to expand an existing operation, or you might even receive tax breaks and/or subsidized SBA loans.

Educational financial aid-Sometimes the state funds private and public financial aid awards. These state grants usually do not have to be paid back. The only exception is if the student did not fulfill all the requirements of receiving the grant.

Humanities project funds-This may be awarded to someone who wants to study literature and/or history. It may be money that is awarded to a group who wants to put on a lecture at a museum or other tourist center.

Historical research grants-Often these are done to help further study in a given area pertaining to history and culture. This is done to help a person learn as much as possible about a given location. It is done to help preserve a location so that future generations understand the roots of a city, town, or other locality.

Science and technology cash awards-This may be given to individuals or groups interested in projects that could help better the economy of an area. This is often done by making advancements in ways that could make a location more productive.

Community improvement money-Sometimes state grants are allocated to fund rebuilding of roads, picking up litter on the highway, and more. Perhaps an area park might need some landscaping done or maybe a downtown historical festival might take place. Funding for these kinds of activities often may be in part provided by the state.

State grants are very individualized. Usually in order to qualify you need to live in the location that is offered the money and you may need to carry out a variety of tasks related to receipt of funding.

Of course, you have to apply for approval ahead of time by a certain deadline. This will ensure that you have a better chance of receiving the money.
