As tempting as it is to work at home, not many people actually have the drive, the fortitude, the stamina, and the sheer stick-to-it-iveness to make a successful go at it. This may come as a bit of a surprise since the prospect of working at home seems to carry with it a fair bit of advantage that simply cannot be matched by a similar position in a corporate setting. While this may be true to a certain degree, the fact remains that in order to work at home, you will need to be equipped with even more discipline than a person working in an office would.
Think about it. When you work in an office, you will likely have a boss–or at the very least, a supervisor–hovering around you and breathing down your neck constantly. While this is definitely not an ideal situation by any means, you have to admit that it will keep you in check and your nose to the grindstone so to speak. When you work at home on the other hand, you don’t have the “benefit” of someone watching over you and monitoring your progress, largely leaving you to your own devices.
While this may sound like a pretty good deal to you, the temptation to slack off and watch TV or play video games is oftentimes too strong to resist. Do you really have the willpower to keep yourself plugging away for hours and hours at a time even without someone cracking the whip? If you can honestly answer yes to that question, then you just nay have what it takes to work at home and make a successful run at it.
Discipline goes the other way as well. Before you even think about working at home, you will have to discuss your plan with your partner and see how he or she feels about it. You will have to clearly explain that working at home automatically means that you have a lot more free time to take care of the kids or see to the endless household chores that need to be done. Of course you will have a lot more time to do those things than you ever did when you were a paid corporate slave, but work at home means just that–work–and you have to set a rigidly defined schedule that details when your work day ends and your family life begins.
Working at home brings with it a great deal of freedom that those stuck in their cubicles in the high rise buildings downtown can only dream of. In order to make the situation work to your advantage however, discipline is essential.
