The Reality Of Work At Home Opportunities

Working at home definitely has its perks…just ask anyone who has been doing it for quite sometime now (like me for instance!). Flexible hours, lots of time to spend with family, being able to take power naps whenever you want, unlimited access to the fridge (if I manage to fill it up that is!), and the sheer sense of power that comes from knowing that you can simply call it a day and watch TV anytime you want. Ok, so that last one isn’t exactly true…there is work to be done and bills to be paid after all.

In spite of the luxurious lifestyle of a work at home professional, there lurks a dark side that bears taking into consideration. For starters, there is the need to maintain a strict level of discipline, in fact far more than you would need in a regular office setting. While you do have a certain amount of flexibility with regard to setting your sleeping, eating, and working schedules when you work at home, it doesn’t mean that you can just slack off whenever you want…not if you want to be able to keep your job that is. When you work at home, you are essentially the boss, which means that you will have to keep a pretty tight reign on your lowly workers, and that means you.

Another factor to consider is that it will likely take a very long time before you will be able to get anywhere near a comfortable income level. Sure there are numerous opportunities to make money out there if you are inventive, but you really have to pound the (virtual) pavement constantly in search of new income generating opportunities. Just because you are working today doesn’t mean that you will be working next week and you should make full use of your time in drumming up new business even while you are toiling away on a current project. It’s a pretty taxing task let me assure you, and it seems that the constant cycle of working and looking for more jobs is a never-ending one.

Even if you are able to pull in the contracts, you will have to be pretty consistent in delivering high quality work. Unlike in the corporate world wherein a few minor missteps wont necessarily mean the loss of your job, the work at home world is far less forgiving. It only take one disgruntled client to pass word around about your mess-up, and you could be feeling the effects of your error for a long time to come.

All this isn’t meant to scare you off from working at home but rather to emphasize the challenges that you will have to face. Keep your nose to the grindstone and have a thick skin however, and you may just have a career that will last you for the long term.
