Ask most people how they feel about being able to work at home, and they will probably respond pretty favorably…at least until they have actually tried it out for themselves. As appealing as the prospect of working at home is, there are various aspects to it that may prove to be just as challenging as working under the most stifling corporate settings. It is not always a simple and straightforward task to work at home, and there are a number of factors that you will have to take into consideration if you are to survive and hopefully flourish in such a situation. Some of the situations that you will have to keep in mind are listed below.
“How can this be a disadvantage?” you may be asking. No distractions, no office politics, no chitchat around the water cooler…seems like a good deal doesn’t it? The truth of the matter however is that even the most reclusive people may end up climbing the walls when faced with a work at home opportunity that requires them to be by themselves day in and day out. Being alone does have a number of advantages, but you won’t have the benefit of other people to bounce ideas off of, to give you an objective opinion, or simply to break the monotony. It takes a special breed of person to be able to withstand the isolation of working home alone, and you may well buckle under the strain.
Working at home for an indefinite period may give you a sense of being trapped in the same four walls. Depending on how well you can handle the restricted space and lack of other things to see, you may find that this is the most challenging aspect of a work at home job. You may also find it increasingly hard to maintain focus and you may eventually be tempted to turn on the TV, chat with someone on the Internet or pick up the phone, all of which will take precious time away from your work.
When you work at home, you will essentially be your own boss and it is up to you to crack the whip and get the slaves working on that pyramid. Unfortunately it is you who will be playing the dual role of slave driver and slave, and you just may end up giving yourself a break more often than not! In order to succeed at this, you will have to be equipped with equal measures of motivation and inspiration, and have the willpower to muster up the troops (yourself) when they simply aren’t feeling up to the task.
